A vaccine called Gardasil has been developed that protects against the two high-risk HPV types (types 16 and 18), which cause 70% of cervical cancers in women and 90% of all HPV-related cancers in men. It also protects against two low-risk HPV types (types 6 and 11), which cause 90% of genital warts. Who should and should not have the HPV vaccine? All boys and girls aged 12–13 years should have the HPV vaccine. The vaccine is most effective at this stage, before sexual activity has commenced and when the body produces more antibodies. if you have already been infected with the type of HPV that causes genital warts, you can still protect yourself against the types that can cause cancer since you may not be infected with those types yet.
