There are multiple options available for reconstruction of the breast following breast cancer surgery (oncoplastic breast surgery) but the new form-stable highly cohesive silicone gel implants are a great option for reconstructive surgery. It’s important to understand that there is very little tissue available for coverage over the implant following a mastectomy, so there are aesthetic concerns over visible rippling, implant edges showing or being able to feel the implant edges. This is more common with saline implants, but occurs with regular silicone gel implants too. The form-stable implants (nicknamed “gummy bear” implants) are firm enough not to ripple, and feel more like natural tissue than either saline or silicone gel. Implants can also be combined with flap reconstruction, adding a layer of natural tissue for further coverage and results that look and feel more organic. Be sure to visit a board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in breast reconstruction for the best outcome.
