What is Primary Biliary Cirrhosis?
Also known as primary biliary cholangitis, PBC is an autoimmune, chronic disease involving the bile ducts of the liver. It causes slow destruction of the duct, leading to a build-up of bile and toxins. This may end up causing Cholestasis.
What are the symptoms of Primary Biliary Cirrhosis?
Since it is a chronic disease, there may not be any symptoms in the early stage. The symptoms may develop in five to twenty years. Early-stage symptoms may include tiredness, itchiness, dry eyes and mouth. Some symptoms of the later stage include swelling in the feet and ankle, jaundice, diarrhoea, joint pain, pain in the abdomen and easy breakage of bones.
Are there any risk factors for PBC?
Risk factors for primary biliary cirrhosis include gender, as women are more susceptible to this problem, age (more common among the older population), family history of PBC, and location. Factor like smoking, infections and toxic chemicals may also contribute to primary biliary cirrhosis.
Can Primary Biliary Cirrhosis be left untreated?
No PBC cannot be left untreated. Primary Biliary Cirrhosis may further cause gallstones and bile stones, cirrhosis, varices, enlargement of the spleen, vitamin deficiencies, among others.
What are the diagnostic tests done for PBC?
The diagnostic tests for primary biliary cirrhosis include cholesterol test, LFT, test for antibodies for autoimmune diseases, liver biopsy, among others. The tests may be modified according to the symptoms and condition of the patient. Some imaging tests like Ultrasound, MRI, ERCP may also be advised.
What is a liver biopsy?
Liver biopsy is a diagnostic procedure in which a small needle is inserted into the liver to collect a sample for analysis. This procedure can be done in daycare or OPD or during the surgery of the patient.
How much does a liver biopsy cost?
A liver biopsy cost may vary according to the type of biopsy and how it is done.
