The radiation therapy is a painless procedure with relatively less painful side effects. Before one undergoes the procedure, the doctor will explain all the required details like the various steps of the procedure, etc. It may include the following processes:

Radiation simulation: During this process, the doctor and the accompanying team will make the patient sit in the correct and comfortable position. Finding a comfortable position is vital because the patient has to lie in the same position for more than 30 minutes without any movement.

CT scans: After the simulation, the patient will undergo a CT scan and the therapy team will determine the area of the body to be treated. The radiation team will decide what type of radiation and dose is required for the patient, based on the type and stage of cancer.

The doctors use a linear accelerator to perform external beam radiation therapy. A linear accelerator is a machine that releases high-energy beams of radiation to the patient's body.

Each session will last for at least 10-30 minutes. During the session, the patient needs to lie down in the same position. In the case of lung or breast cancer, the patient may even be asked to hold the breath for some time.
