Before starting the surgery, the doctor performs the physical examination of the patient and goes through his/her medical history. From a patient's history, a doctor typically looks for important aspects like hearing loss, duration of perforation, vertigo, otitis media, the severity of otalgia and more.

After 10 days the patient needs to visit the doctor to see if the graft is successful removed or not. The patient needs to take care of the following things after the procedure:

• Keep the ear away from water

• Avoid heavy weight lifting

• Avoid going to the gym for at least 4 weeks

• Use earphones or cotton dipped in vaseline before having a bath or washing hairs.

• Keep the head elevated on 1-2 pillows while laying down

• Avoid nose blowing

Generally, patients can get back to work after five to six days of operations. The bandage will be removed after 2-3 weeks. The said doctor will perform a final checkup after four to six weeks to ensure the success of the surgery.

Every surgical procedure includes some risks and complications. Similarly, tympanoplasty also has the following risks:

• Pain, infection or bleeding

• Failure of the graft to heal

• Causing recurrent eardrum perforation

• Scarring or adhesions in the middle ear

• Narrowing of the ear canal

There are very rare chances of these complications. Most of the tympanoplasty procedures are performed without any risk.
