In case your doctor suggests hip replacement surgery, you should practice the following:

Medicines: You are expected to inform your doctor about the medications you take. You may be asked to discontinue some medicines before surgery. 

Smoking: It is strongly advised that you stop smoking before your surgery. 

General examination: A general physical examination will be conducted by the doctor.

Tests: X-rays, blood tests, MRI scan are some tests required by the doctor.

Fasting: You should not eat anything after midnight on the day of surgery.

The doctor will give you anesthesia to numb the pain before the surgery begins. First, your doctor will make an incision along the side or front of the hip to access the joint. 

Through this incision, the doctor will remove the damaged joint and an artificial joint is attached. The prosthetic is fixed by using a special material into your pelvic bone. Followed by this, the round ball is also replaced by a prosthetic ball. This ball is fixed to a stem that fits into the thighbone.

The following protocol shall be followed by doctors after the surgery:

• The medical staff at the hospital will monitor your blood pressure, pulse, among other things.

• Drains will be removed from your body.

• You will be asked to walk a little with the help of a staff member. 

• You are expected to wear elastic compression stockings on your leg to maintain pressure.

• You should avoid crossing your legs post-operation.

• Do not sit in low sofas or chairs.
