If you have been recommended to undergo Peripheral Angioplasty, you must practice the following steps before the procedure:

Fasting: 6-8 hours of fasting before the procedure. This is done as Peripheral Angioplasty uses anesthesia. If you consume any food item before the test, you may suffer from some complications. If you are on certain medications, your doctor may advise you to consume them with little water. 

Medical Information: You must inform your doctor about the medications you intake, especially blood pressure medicines.

Allergies: If you are allergic to any specific medicine (or contrast material), you should inform the medical experts at the cath lab. 

Medical History: If you have any medical history of bleeding problems, you should notify your doctor about it.

Pregnancy: If you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant, notify your healthcare provider. 

Diabetes: If you are diabetic, ask your doctor if you should take your medications before the test.

The procedure of Angioplasty takes only one to two hours. To begin with, the patient will be given anesthesia to help relax. Angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure and hence only a small incision is made on your hip or groin depending on the location of the blocked artery. 

Through this incision, the doctor will insert a catheter in the body. He will then guide it to the blockage. The catheter flushes dye which helps your surgeon view the arteries using a special X-ray to identify your blockage.

After this, the surgeon will pass a small wire which has a small balloon attached to it. Once the balloon reaches the blockage, it is inflated to widen the artery. A stent is also introduced at the same time as the balloon and expands with it. Once the stent is in place, the catheter is removed and the incision is closed and dressed.

After the procedure is completed, the following steps or guidelines shall be followed by you and the medical staff:

• After the procedure, the catheter will be removed and the nurses will constantly monitor your heart rate and blood pressure.

• The catheter insertion site may be bruised. Depending on the location where the catheter was inserted, the doctor may ask you to lie down and restrict your movement. You will be able to walk after 2 to 6 hours of operation.

• Usually, the patients stay at the hospital for a day. You may be allowed to go home early depending on your condition.

• Avoid any sort of heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for the next few weeks.

• Avoid smoking or consumption of alcohol after the procedure for several weeks or quit if possible.

• Drink plenty of fluids. Consult your doctor before resuming the intake of any medications.

Angioplasty is a safe and sound procedure if performed by qualified experts. However, certain risks are associated with this procedure. The following is a set of such complications that may be caused by this procedure

• Allergic reactions to medication or dye

• Breathing problems

• Bleeding

• Re-narrowing of your arteries

• Rupture of your artery

• Swelling in your limbs

• Blood clots

• Infection

• Kidney damage

The risks associated with Peripheral Angioplasty are less but they are serious. Take the prescribed medications regularly as they may help prevent blood clotting and other major complications.
