The following is a set of guidelines to be followed before the surgery

Tests: Some imaging and diagnostic tests will be recommended by the doctor. Some common tests required before radical prostatectomy are cystoscopy, blood tests, urine tests and more.

Medicines: You should inform your doctor about your medical prescriptions. The doctor may ask you to stop some medicines. 

Allergies: You are expected to inform your doctor about any kind of allergies you have. 

Fasting: You should not eat or drink anything after midnight on the day of surgery. 

Enema: You may be asked to have an enema before the surgery to clear your bowels.

Your doctor will first give you anesthesia before starting the surgery. The process of procedure differs for each of radical prostatectomy:

Open radical prostatectomy- This is a traditional surgical method. In this procedure, the surgeon makes a wide vertical cut in the lower abdomen region. The area below the belly button and above the pelvic bone is chosen. Through this wide incision, the surgeon gets access to operate. He/she then cut the prostate gland from surrounding blood vessels. The prostate gland is removed. Along with the gland, a small portion of nearby tissue is also removed. 

Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy- This is a type of minimally invasive method. In laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, the surgeon makes several small incisions across the belly. The doctors use these incisions to insert tools and a camera. The surgeon views the inside of the body through the camera and operates on the patient. He/she then removes the prostate gland and stitches the incisions afterward. 

Robot-assisted Radical Prostatectomy- This is a new advanced technology. It is a minimally invasive procedure. In this procedure, the surgeon controls the robotic system of surgical tools. The surgeon gets a 3D view of the surgical site. The surgeon uses the robotic system to make small incisions to remove the prostate gland.

After the procedure is complete, you can expect the following steps to be taken:

• Your doctor will give you instructions regarding your medicines

• Your medical team will help you walk in a day or two after surgery

• You should not drive or lift heavy objects.

• You are expected to refrain from indulging in any sexual activity until you fully recovered

• Your nurse will instruct on how to take care of your catheter when you go home

• You will be suggested to drink lots of fluids

• Urinary Incontinence

• Infection at the surgery site
