As soon as a liver has been identified, the liver transplant coordinator or the doctor will contact and inform the patient about it. Following things must be followed strictly by the patient once he is called to the transplant center or the hospital after the intimation-

• He must not eat or drink anything after getting the intimation,

• When the patient arrives at the hospital, additional blood tests, electrocardiogram, and a chest X-ray will be conducted before the surgery.

If the liver of the donor matches with the patient’s liver then the transplant procedure would start on the same day, otherwise, the patient would be sent back home in case of mismatch.

This surgery is done using general anesthesia, which would make the patient completely unconscious and go into deep sleep keeping him unaware during the whole procedure. 

Firstly, the transplant surgeon will make a long incision across the patient’s abdomen to get access to the liver. The location and size of the incision may vary as per the surgeon’s approach and the patient’s anatomy. Now, he will disconnect the liver’s blood supply and the bile ducts to remove the diseased liver and place the donor’s liver in the patient’s body and reattach the blood vessels and the bile ducts. Finally, the surgeon with the help of stitches and staples would close the surgical incision. This is the procedure if the donor is a deceased person.

In case, if the donor is a living donor then, only a portion of his liver will be substituted. The surgeon first operates the donor and removes a portion of his liver for a transplant. Then, he removes the dysfunctional liver of the patient and places the donated liver portion in his body. And finally, the surgeon connects the blood vessels and bile ducts to the new liver.

Usually, the doctor may ask the patient to stay in the hospital for 2 to 3 weeks after the surgery. The patient will be shifted from the intensive care unit to the regular nursing room. The nursing staff and doctors would do the following things before discharging you from the hospital-

• They will make the patient aware of the new medications and how to monitor his blood pressure and pulse rate.

• They would make you learn about the signs of rejection and infection of the new liver.
