At the operation theatre, the medical team would cleanse the operation portion or the abdomen area of the body with a solution. 4. Radical Nephrectomy: It is a procedure to remove the whole kidney from a patient’s body along with the fatty tissues surrounding the kidney and a portion of the tube connecting the kidney to the bladder called ureter. The adrenal gland, which sits atop the kidney, may also be removed if a tumor is close to or involves the adrenal gland too. In some surgeries, the lymph nodes or other tissues are removed as well.

5. Partial Nephrectomy: It is a procedure where a part of the kidney is removed and the remaining part which is considered healthy is left at its place. Partial nephrectomy is also known as kidney sparing or nephron-sparing surgery. Here, the surgeon removes only the cancerous tumor affected a part of the kidney and leaves behind the healthy tissue.

The patient’s recovery time and his stay at the hospital post-surgery depend on his overall health and the type of nephrectomy surgery performed. The urinary catheter is left attached to the patient for a short period during his recovery. The doctors will give the patient a proper diet and activities chart before his discharge along with medications. At home, the patient may start his daily chores on a light basis but needs to avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting for several weeks.

• Waste Filtration: Glomerular filtration rate measures how efficiently a person’s kidney filters waste. A lower filtration rate is a sign of decreased kidney function.
