If you have been recommended by your doctor to undergo Pacemaker Surgery, you’ll need several tests. These tests can ensure that a pacemaker is a right choice for you.

• Echocardiogram – This test uses sound waves to determine the size and thickness of your heart and displays its image on a monitor.

• Electrocardiogram – This test is done to measure the heart’s electrical impulses.

• Holter Monitoring – A device is attached to your wrist to monitor the rhythm of your heart. It is similar to an electrocardiogram.

• Stress Test – This test is done to monitor the disturbances in your heart while exercising.

Apart from the above tests, your doctor might ask you to follow certain guidelines like:

• Avoid eating or drinking the night before your surgery.

• Take the medicines prescribed by your doctor.

• You may be asked to bathe with a special soap to remove germs and avoid any infection after the surgery.

• Avoid taking blood thinners like aspirin before the surgery.

Once the local tests are done, the doctor will numb the area where the surgery is being performed using anesthesia. Also, a mild sedative will be given to avoid discomfort to the patient. Once it is done, the doctor will clean the area to remove germs and make a small incision on your chest.

Wires will be inserted through the chest to attach the device to the heart. An incision is again made after this in the abdomen or chest to place the pacemaker device under the skin. The wires from the heart are then connected to the pacemaker and tested to check if it is working properly.

Later, the incision is closed with stitches or strips and the patient is given medicines to wake up.

After the procedure is completed, the following steps will be performed by the medical expert or nursing staff:

• You will be staying at the hospital overnight. Your doctor will ensure that the device is programmed as per your heart’s needs.

• The doctor may reprogram the pacemaker as and when needed in the follow-up sessions.

• Avoid rigorous training or heavy lifting in the following months.

• If you have any queries, consult your doctor before performing routine activities like taking medicines, or bathing. 

• Certain electronic devices may interfere with the pacemaker. Hence you should avoid keeping them near the pacemaker or long exposures to devices like:

1. Cell phones & mp3 players

2. Metal detectors

3. Microwaves

4. High – Voltage Transformers

Pacemaker Surgery is a safe and sound procedure if performed by qualified experts. However, certain risks are associated with this procedure. The following is a set of such complications:
