There are a few preoperative steps that the doctor and patient would have to take before the procedure. 

In case your neurosurgeon recommends you to have vertebroplasty, the following set of rules should be practiced:

Tests: Some routine tests like X-rays would be conducted by the doctor. Cross-sectional imaging, MRI, blood tests and CT Scans are some common tests performed. For the diagnosis, doctors ask for radiography of the spinal column.

Fasting: You should not eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours before the procedure. This is done to avoid any unnecessary complications. You should especially avoid drinking juice, cream or milk. 

Medical history: The doctor will discuss your complete medical history.

Physical examination: Your doctor will conduct a complete examination of your health before conducting the surgery.

Medicines: Your doctor will ask you to discontinue medicines, especially blood-thinners before the surgery. You should also mention any herbal or ayurvedic drugs that you might be taking. 

Allergies: If you know about any allergies you have, mention them to your doctor. If you are allergic to local anesthesia, the doctor must always be informed. 

Pregnancy: It is required by women to inform the doctor about their pregnancy before surgery. The doctor can then prepare for any complications that may arise.

You will be given anesthesia to numb the pain during the procedure. The nursing staff in the operation theatre will monitor your blood pressure, pulse and breathing throughout vertebroplasty. 

The surgeon begins by inserting a needle in your skin. He/she uses continuous X-ray to guide the needle to the cracked or fractured bone. Once the bone is identified, the surgeon slowly injects the cement into the bone.

Vertebroplasty is not a lengthy procedure. After the surgery:

• Your health will be monitored by the nursing staff 

• You will be asked to lie down for an hour so that the cement can harden in its position

• You may be given pain relief medicines by the doctor if you experience pain after the surgery

• You will be asked to wear a back brace until recovery 

• You will have frequent follow-ups with the doctor

Vertebroplasty is a safe procedure. There are some minor complications associated with this procedure. These complications include:

• Bleeding 

• Fracture of ribs 

• Fever

• Infections 

• Allergy due to anesthesia

• Leakage of cement before it hardens

• Hemorrhaging
