Once the patient goes to the doctor for urostomy surgery, the doctor will run an examination and ask some health-related questions to identify the severity of the condition.

Chest X-ray
Blood tests

Patients should disclose all the prescriptions and over the counter medications, they may have taken with the doctor. Patients are also advised to stop taking medications a week prior to the surgery.
Patients are also advised to refrain from drinking alcohol or smoking. Doing so would so will reduce the risk of any other complication and improve recovery the rate of recovery from the surgery.
As the first step during the procedure, the patient will be given anesthesia. This procedure can be performed with general anesthesia. On being treated with the anesthesia, the patient will not feel any pain during the surgery and will be in a sleep-like state until the anesthesia wears off.
Then the doctor starts the procedure by removing a piece of the intestine called ileum. The rest of the intestine will be reconnected to establish a normal bowel movement. One end of the ileum is attached to ureters and the other end is attached to the stoma. The urine will now pass from the ureters through the ileum to a pouch that you have to wear outside your body. This surgery takes around three to six hours. Thereafter you will be moved to the special care unit.
After the surgery, you need to stay in the hospital for four to seven days. Initially, you will have a drain in place to remove the fluid from the body. The doctor will advise the patient to avoid solid food for a few days after the surgery. They will provide all the required nutrients intravenously (IV).
Before a patient leaves the hospital, the medical team will train him/her to wear the urine pouch and how to take care of the wound. They will also prescribe some medications to reduce the pain.
Patients need to avoid lifting weights and refrain from other strenuous activities.
After the surgery, patients may experience few complications like bleeding around the stoma. This is normal. But if the bleeding comes inside the stoma or does not stop within 4 to 10 minutes, then the patient should call for medical attention
Patients will also experience some drainage from the penis or vagina for some days. It should be noted that the flow of urine through stoma could be discomforting.
Some other risk factors include:
Blood clots
Infection
Pneumonia
Patients should call the doctor immediately if they experience any of the following symptoms:
Excessive bleeding from the stoma
Purple, black or white stoma
Change in stoma size
Skin irritation
Strom order from the stoma
