Before opting for this surgery, you should expect the following to happen:

Tests: Your doctor would need the reports for some tests before performing surgery. These tests include blood tests, ECG, breathing tests, echocardiogram, and chest X-ray. 

Fasting: You would be asked not to eat or drink anything after midnight on the day of surgery.

Medical History: Your doctor would record your past medical history.

General examination: Your blood pressure, pulse, temperature and more would also be taken before the surgery. 

Family History: You should inform your doctor about the history of cancer in your family. This is for the doctor’s medical reference. 

Physical exam: A physical check-up of your health would be conducted. The notable symptoms of cancer would also be recorded before the operation.

Many kinds of surgeries are available for treating cancer in the mammary gland. The kind of treatment you get depends on biological factors. The process of each surgery differs. 

Before any surgery, your doctor would give you anesthesia to numb the pain during the operation. The anesthesia will keep you in a sleepy state throughout the surgery. 

• Lumpectomy- This is also called Wide Local Excision or Breast-conserving surgery. During this procedure, the doctor will remove the lump along with a clear margin of healthy cells. This is aimed at removing cancer cells from the site.

• Mastectomy- In the mastectomy surgery, the entire breast is removed. The surgeon operates on the entire area and removes both healthy and non-healthy (cancerous) tissues. 

• Reconstructive Surgery- This surgery is optional for patients. After a mastectomy, where the whole breast is removed, a person can choose to go through reconstruction surgery.

• Removal of lymph nodes- cancer in mammary glands can spread easily to lymph nodes. The surgeon would first check the lymph nodes. If cancer had already spread, a margin of lymph nodes is removed. This operation has two types: sentinel lymph nodes biopsy (small amount of nodes are removed) and axillary lymph node dissection (multiple nodes are removed).

After your surgery is complete, the following steps would be followed:

• The nurse will check your blood pressure, pulse, and breathing. 

• A bandage would be placed on the surgery site

• You may feel pain and numbness in your underarm area

• You would be instructed by your doctors and nurses on how to care for yourself after the surgery

• You should discuss all your doubts with your healthcare team 

• You would be prescribed medicines 

• You should shower on the next day of surgery

Though all types of surgeries for the treatment of this cancer are safe, some risks are associated with them. Some of the common risks and complications noted by doctors include:

• Infections at the surgery site

• Bleeding

• Allergic reactions of anesthesia

• Swelling in the underarm

• Collection of fluid in the area where surgery was done

• Pain 

• Permanent Scar 

• Loss of sensation in the chest

• Problems in wound healing
