Do you see the colors as they are? Do you experience difficulty in seeing different shades? If the answer to these is yes, then you are color blind. Color blindness is a deficiency in perceiving the color you see. With this problematic visualization, you may have difficulty to distinguish certain colors, like blue and yellow or red and green. But no need to worry at all. There is some color blind test which will help in the diagnosis of this condition. However, before considering color blind test, it is important to know more about colorblindness.

What Is Color Blindness?

Color blindness is an inherited condition affecting 1 in every 12 (8%) men and 1 in every 200 (0.5%) women more frequently than females. This means that you can definitely see one color blind person in your neighborhood. Very few people are actually incapable of differentiating colors; mostly red and green; others cannot identify blue from yellow. Color blind test, color blindness treatment

The Genetics Behind Color Blindness

Color blindness is a genetic (hereditary) condition which is determined by a recessive gene on the X chromosome. The genes for color blindness are located on the X chromosome. Males are homogametic (have only one X chromosome), so a genetic change in each cell can cause this condition. On the other hand, females being heterogametic (have two X chromosomes), a genetic change occurring in both copies of the chromosome leads to the disorder.

Causes Of Color Blindness

A difference in one or more of the light-sensitive cells responding to certain colors found in the retina of the eye causes color blindness. These cells called 'cone cells' sense wavelengths of light, and facilitate the retina to distinguish between colors. A difference in sensitivity in one or more cone cells can make a person color blind. Apart from this cause, the condition can also arise from illness, trauma or a side-effect of certain medications.

Symptoms Of Color Blindness

The mild symptoms may not even be noticed. However, some most common symptoms of color blindness are:
  • Difficulty to distinguish between colors
  • Lack of ability to see shades of the same color

Can Color Blindness Be Detected?

Definitely yes. The condition is detected through a comprehensive eye exam that includes a color vision test which involves the patient looking at a series of colored images. A person with a normal color vision can distinguish the shapes in these images, while a color-blind person cannot.

Color Blind Test

If you see an unexpected change in perceiving a color, seek an ophthalmologist immediately. There are some tests for color blindness which help to diagnose the condition.
  • Ishihara color test: This color blind test detects red-green color blindness by simply visualizing a series of circles made with dots of different colors and sizes.
  • Farnsworth-Munsell 100 hue test: In this color blind test blocks of different shades of the same color are used, which investigates if you can identify color changes.

Color Blindness Treatment

Here are some methods for treating color blindness-

Use of Contact Lenses

Presently, there is no treatment for color blindness. But the condition can be corrected as certain treatments help in perceiving better colors. Contact lenses or glasses can be used in some situations to augment the brightness between certain shades of colors more accurately. These filter out certain wavelengths of light to better distinguish red and green colors making them more vibrant. Contact lenses of glasses are occasionally preferred at the workplace, however, many color blind people find these actually confusing than helpful. Gene Therapy

Color blindness can also be treated by some form of gene therapy which involves the repairing of the damaged chromosome. Researchers are working hard to correct the genetic abnormalities that cause this form of color blindness. However this is only educated alertness, as there is no scientific method available at present that shows any signs of promise of a cure for color blindness.

Color Blindness Apps

In today's digital era, Color blindness can also be treated by using some mobile apps which help with color detection. These new apps for Android and Apple devices are specially designed to help colorblind people or to educate the ones who don't know how this looks and feels like.
