Common Questions about Hernia, Piles, and Bowel Movement

We asked Dr. Sandip Banerjee some intriguing and common questions related to his field of expertise. So let's have a look at the answers. Que 1. Nearly 41 million people in India suffer from piles. Why is this condition so common in India? What can Indians do to prevent it? Piles, also called hemorrhoids, are very common. This problem is not only common in India. It is common worldwide because of some changes in the food style and spices. We are very prone to bowel problems. Piles is a very prominent disease in Indians. The main reason for it is that people keep it to themselves instead of going to a doctor. Out of embarrassment, these problems are never answered and so patients with these problems are not being treated. Few factors which induce all bowel problems are: 1. Constipation problem - Every one of us has the habit of having nature's call. Early morning at 4 a.m. - 5 a.m. when our large intestine moves a lot and pushes the stool towards the rectum, by which you get the reflex to pass the motion. Somewhere, due to the ignorance of these signs, people start having constipation. According to Dr. Sandip, constipation is the sole reason for future bowel problems. 2. With the change in time and lifestyle, people are becoming busier. The absence of regular physical activities reduces bowel moments. Also, people of younger age groups have started having hemorrhoids. One of the main reasons for this is the change in food style, which includes junk foods that don't have enough fibers. But, this type of food becomes the first choice for the young generation. 3. The other reason for such condition includes social taboos that stop people from visiting a physician or a specialized surgeon for these problems. Compared to men, women avoid getting expert advice. Hence, this type of disease is more prominent in women. Four things are very important for the prevention of piles.
  1. Add a lot of liquid or water to your diet. One should have 3-4 liters of water in their diet.
  2. Your diet plan should contain fruits, vegetables, and fibers that prevent future constipation or bowel problems.
  3. You should indulge in regular physical activities.
  4. Always identify nature's call.
Follow these four major points and if you are still facing any problems, do consult with a specialist. Que 2. It is believed that surgery is the ultimate option for the treatment of piles. How valid is the statement? Before answering this question, I want to clear one thing. Most people think that any problem in the anus is piles, which is incorrect. It could be any other problem. Every patient is not the same. So every case doesn't require surgery. Most of the time the right kind of medications cure the disease. If a patient is suffering from early haemorrhoid, then the specialist follows the non-surgical methods of treatment. For severe conditions, also called prolapsed haemorrhoid, the doctor recommends surgical treatment. The type of surgery varies from patient to patient. Que 3.People are still embarrassed and fearful of treatment and even discussion on haemorrhoids. What would be your message to patients who have such emotions? This is a very genuine problem and concern in our society because of which this problem is getting bigger and bigger. The first and foremost thing is that you have to come out of the social taboo. The anal canal is 4cm in length, inside the body. It is an organ and enables the action of defecation, which is very important, like the act of swallowing. So if defecation is not done properly, it can lead to some serious problems. If you feel embarrassed to talk about this, you can find some verified health websites where information is provided. My advice is to consult a doctor instead of trusting any random website or person. If you do not consult a doctor or specialist, it may lead to a critical problem. So, to prevent these problems, do not fear to discuss them. Always keep in mind that you are not the only one facing this problem. 20-30% of our society is suffering from it. Que 4. What puts women at higher risk of getting hernia after C-section? Is it possible to prevent it? C-section has become very common nowadays. There are ideal C-sections to prevent hernia formation. A hernia develops whenever the abdominal wall, which acts as a barrier from developing a hernia, gets weak. If there is a weakness in the abdominal wall, it may develop into a hernia. How does this weakness happen? When we make an incision during open surgeries, it causes weakness. The chances of developing hernia are very high in women who give birth to twins by c-section, as the incision is bigger in that case. The second thing is the post-operative infection. Wound infection has a high risk of developing a hernia. The third important thing is if the incision is not closed properly, then it can increase the chances of hernia. How will you understand that it has developed into a hernia? After 3-4 months of c-section, you may feel some sort of pain and swelling at the incision site. If you find these symptoms, do consult with your doctor. The only way to prevent hernia in C-section is by giving good closure and preventing post-operative infection. If you have a hernia, you must go to a surgeon. It has to be treated surgically. There is no other way to treat this problem. Que 5. What is your approach at Apollo Spectra for the treatment and management of hernia? Do you face any limitations in this field? Well, Apollo Spectra has the best technology for the treatment of all types of hernia. We have the latest laparoscopic instruments from Germany. In 90% of cases, we do laparoscopic surgeries for all types of hernia. The limitation which we face is the patient's understanding of hernia, where we have to counsel them for the type of treatment methods we are using to cure their disease.
