A number of masses can be found within the female breast but not all of them are cancerous. So, don’t panic if you find a mass. Among the benign masses, most are only an inconvenience and have no threat, but some may be associated with increased long-term risk of breast cancer.
A fibroadenoma is a benign mass of fibrous and glandular tissue. They are most commonly found in women aged 15 to 35. They enhance in size with estrogen stimulation and regress after the menopause.
There are two basic types of fibroadenomas: simple and complex. Simple fibroadenomas don’t pose an increased risk of breast cancer and often a surgical removal of the mass and the routine follow-up is enough.
A complex fibroadenoma can be related to a modest increase in long-term risk of breast cancer. A woman with this mass is 1.5 to 2 times more likely to have breast cancer in her lifetime than women in general. The treatment of a complex fibroadenoma is the complete surgical removal and then enhanced surveillance or enhanced screening for breast cancer.
