At the pre-procedure stage, a doctor conducts a session with a mother wherein the former briefs the latter about several aspects associated with the surgery. Next, the mother will be required to sign a consent form to officially give her approval for the surgery. The mother can ask questions to clear any kind of doubts or confusion she may have.

A doctor may ask whether or not the mother wants to undergo tubal ligation. The next course of action will depend on whether the C-section procedure of a mother is a planned one or an abrupt one. In case it is a planned surgery, the mother will be asked to fast for eight hours for administering an epidural, general or spinal anesthesia. • In the OT, a urinary catheter in addition to an intravenous line may be placed in the body.

• An antiseptic solution may be used to clean the body and the hair may be clipped to prevent any distraction.

• A drape will be put on the chest area as well as the abdomen, to cover the surgical site.

• A specialist will monitor the heartbeat and other necessary bodily functions.

• As soon as the effects of anesthesia kicks in, the specialist will start the incision in the abdominal section just above the pubic bone. It may be vertical or transverse, depending on the mother’s condition. This will be followed by multiple incisions until the incision reaches the uterus. • Next, the baby will be delivered after opening the amniotic sac through its opening. A medication will be given in the IV and the umbilical cord to help contract the uterus and release the placenta.

Thereafter, the opening in the uterine muscles will be closed with sutures. Next, the uterus will be restored to its actual position in the pelvic cavity.

• Lastly, sutures will be used to close the openings in the layers of muscles and tissues. Sutures, in conjunction with surgical staples, will also be used to close the incisions on the surface of the skin. To prevent it from any kind of infection, sterile dressing or bandage will be applied.

Following the successful completion of a C-section surgery, the mother is asked to remain in the hospital for a few more days.

The mother will be asked to keep herself hydrated and walk for a few minutes to prevent the possibility of constipation or deep vein thrombosis. The doctor will check on the incision for any possible intervention, if necessary. A lactation consultant will guide the mother regarding breastfeeding her child safely in a way that both are well-positioned. Along with this, medications will also be prescribed to relieve her from post-surgical pain.

Before leaving the hospital, the doctor will brief the mother about the medications and precautions she needs to take at subsequent stages.
