Padma shri awardee, Dr. A.K.Bhalla, is a renowned Nephrologist of India. A native of Himachal Pradesh, Dr. Bhalla completed his MBBS from Amritsar Medical College, and MD from PGIMER, Chandigarh. He also possesses degrees of DM, FISN, and MNAMS. With a considerable amount of expertise in performing Vascular Access Surgery for Haemodialysis, he was the first Nephrologist to introduce the technique of Home Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) in India in the year 1989. The former Secretary General of Peritoneal Dialysis Society of India, Dr. Bhalla is actively involved in charitable activities across Delhi. He takes keen interest in organizing free health check up camps and medicine camps. He has also established a charitable hospital in Delhi to serve the under-privileged and needy people. His contribution to Medicine has been remarkable & exemplary, and this is primarily why the honorable President of India bestowed him with the Padamshri in the year 2010. Presently he is the Secretary at the Delhi Nephrology Society and is the Co-Chairperson of Nephrology Division at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi.
