If your doctor has recommended surgery as the only option of removing the gallstones then you must follow the below mentioned pre-procedure guidelines without fail.

1. Drink a solution to clean out your intestines. This prescription solution will be given to you days before the date of your surgery that will flush stool out of your intestines.

2. Stay empty stomach the night before your surgery. You will be asked to avoid both drinking fluids as well as eating at least four hours before the time of your surgery. You will be allowed only to take a sip of water but only with your medications.

3. Stop the intake of certain medications and supplements. Except for the prescribed medications, the doctor will ask you to stop taking certain medicines and supplements which can increase your risk of bleeding.

• Minimally Invasive (Laparoscopic) Cholecystectomy - In this type of surgery, the surgeon makes four incisions in the patient’s abdomen. A tube with a small video camera is then inserted into his abdomen through one of the incisions. To remove the organ, the surgeon inserts surgical tools through the other incisions in the abdomen by watching a video monitor placed in the OT. It usually takes one to two hours to perform this surgery after which the incisions are sutured, and the patient is taken to the recovery room.

Traditional Open Cholecystectomy - In this traditional surgery, the surgeon makes a 6 inches (15 centimeters) incision in the patient’s abdomen, below his ribs on his right side. To reveal the liver or gallbladder, the surgeon pulls back the muscle and tissues and then removes the gallstones from the respective organ. This type of surgery is also one to two hour-long after which the incision is sutured and the patient is taken to a recovery room.

Once you are taken to the recovery area, the anesthetic drug would fade off and then the patient will be taken to a room to continue recovery. Recovery varies with the surgery procedure opted for, which is explained below:

• In Laparoscopic Surgery: Patients are often able to go home the next day of their surgery after some time of rest. A night’s rest at the hospital is recommended by the doctors for observation. Normally, once the patient can eat, drink and talk without feeling any pain, they are discharged from the hospital. It takes about a week to fully recover.

• In Open Surgery: Usually, doctors ask the patients to spend two to three days in the hospital for healthy recovery. And, once at home, the patient can resume their daily chores after four to six weeks of complete rest.

A cholecystectomy has a small risk of complications associated with it, which includes -

• Bile leak

• Bleeding

• Blood clots

• Heart problems

• Infection

• Injury to nearby structures, such as the bile duct, liver and small intestine

• Pancreatitis

• Pneumonia
