If your doctor recommends you to have knee arthroscopy, you are expected to do the following:

Medicines: Inform your doctor about any medicines you take. The doctor may ask you to discontinue some medicines.

Fasting: Do not eat or drink anything for at least 6-12 hours before the surgery. 

Exercises: Some doctors recommend a few exercises before the surgery.

Before the surgery begins, your doctor will give you anesthesia to numb the pain. The surgeon will begin by making a few small cuts on your knee. Followed by this, he/she will pump saline saltwater. This saltwater will expand the knee to allow the doctor to operate freely.

The doctor will insert an arthroscope (small camera) in the incision to look around the knee joint. During this process, the surgeon will be able to look at the images produced by the camera. This helps the doctor diagnose the problem. 

To treat the problem, the surgeon inserts some tools through the arthroscope to correct the tissue. 

Then the surgeon will drain the saline and put stitches to close the incisions.

The following protocols should be practiced post-surgery:

• A dressing will be put on the knee joint

• You will need ice packs on the surgery site to reduce swelling

• Keep your leg elated 

• Your doctor will give instructions about your prescriptions

• You will be advised some exercises to do

Though knee arthroscopy is a safe procedure, certain risks are associated with it:

• Infections 

• Allergy to anesthesia 

• Breathing problems 

• Blood clot 

• Stiffness in the knee
