Both sprains and strains are common injuries, but they’re not the same. A sprain happens when you stretch or tear a ligament, which is the tissue that connects bones at a joint. This often happens in the ankle or wrist. A strain, on the other hand, is when a muscle or tendon gets stretched or torn. It’s more likely to happen in areas like the back or hamstrings.
