What is Menopause? Menopause is medical condition when a women stops having her monthly menstruation and is no longer fertile and unable to reproduce. It marks the period where a woman's body is subject to many hormonal changes, and few of these changes may have an overbearing impact on the lady. The good part is menopause doesn't start overnight but is a gradual process; for most of the times, it begins post the age of 45 years and above thought there are no specific timelines for the same. Hot Flashes and Menopause:

Hot flash is nothing but quick feeling of heat reflected by a flushed face and sweating caused as result of changes in circulation. While they cannot be totally prevented, they can always be made better and reduced. Menopause Self-Care:
  • Prefer wearing light breezy clothes and avoid layering.
  • Prefer dietary restrictions: avoid very oily and spicy food; alcohol is a strict no as it aggravates them.
  • Exercise: this has many benefits but one, It promotes bone growth, keeps weight under check, and address hot flashes.
  • Avoid alcohol, as it can trigger hot flashes.
  • Use soy based products, though there is not much evidence to support it.
  • Practise deep, slow abdominal breathing (for 15 minutes in the morning, 15 minutes in the evening and at the onset of hot flashes. It really helps.
  • In case nothing above helps, it is advised to speak to your doctor about taking hormone replacement therapy, for a brief period of fewer than 5 years. Your doctor would weight the pros and cons and then suggest a treatment plan to best address all the symptoms and cause minimal side effects.

Vaginal Dryness:

Need to Menopause Self-Care! Use topical OTC lubricants and moisturizers to help you tide away painful intercourse and feeling of itchiness. They help in make it more enjoyable and less tacky.

Osteoporosis:

This causes the most damage and would need serious intervention. Calcium and Vitamin D supplements come in handy. There may be cases where specific medicine to address the damage may also be given. In order to build upon bone density, the daily brisk walk is highly recommended and should be made a part of the daily routine.
