Taking proper precautions for your health before travelling to India is very important if you are an NRI who is not accustomed to the environment here. Any particular vaccine apart from the one against Yellow Fever is not compulsory but it is recommended that you get certain vaccinations as a precaution.

Vaccinations should be taken at least four to eight weeks before you leave, as they take time to give you immunity. You should get a "Yellow Booklet" also known as the "International Certificate of Vaccination" from your doctor, which lists down all the vaccinations you have received. In the absence of a certificate, visitors from Africa and South America can be quarantined for up to six days.

What are the vaccinations that NRIs are recommended to get before travelling to India?

Hepatitis A: This vaccination provides you with full protection for up to 1 year. Around 5% to 10% people get mild side effects like headache.
Hepatitis B: This vaccination is given in three different shots over a period of six months. You can also get a rapid schedule for this vaccination.
Typhoid: This vaccination is recommended for everyone who visits India. This vaccine gives you almost 70% protection from the disease. The vaccine is also available in the tablet form.
Polio: Polio was still present in India till 2007. An adult requires just one shot of vaccination for Polio and it gives you lifetime protection.
Adult diptheria and tetanus: A single booster of this is recommended for those people who haven't had any in the last 10 years.
Yellow Fever: This is a compulsory vaccine for everyone who visits India. If an NRI is visiting from South America or Africa, he/she needs to get proof of as well.
Tuberculosis (TB): A skin test for TB is required for travellers before and after the visit. Only one vaccination for TB is given in a lifetime.
