Single incision uterus removal is now a reality in India. Dr. Sejal Naik from Surat successfully performed single incision laparoscopy surgery for uterus removal.

Although this is not news anymore, hysterectomy has been around in other forms of procedures. These are - partial, total, radical hysterectomy, hysterectomy with salpingo-oophrectomy, abdominal hysterectomy, etc.

What is Single Incision Hysterectomy - Uterus Removal?

It is a procedure in which the uterus is removed from the female body. Sometimes, the fallopian tubes and ovaries are also removed. This procedure is called salpingo-oophrectomy. Salpingectomy is the removal of fallopian tube and Oophorectomy is the removal of ovary.

In single-hole surgery, a small cut is made inside the navel (umbilicus). It is made in a way that the scar is literally invisible after the operation. The entire surgery is performed through a single small incision measuring about 1.5 to 2.5 cms.

Advantages

As there is only one small incision, the single hole surgery has pros like:

  • Less pain
  • Early discharge from the hospital
  • Early recovery
  • Less risk of wound infection
  • Lesser risk of hernia formation
  • Excellent cosmetic result being a scarless surgery
