"If we can land a man on the moon, why can't we cure cancer?" Well, not anymore. New universal cancer treatment may have paved the way for a one-size-fits-all therapy approach. Researchers at Cardiff University, UK have accidentally discovered a new type of immune cells that may be able to cure several types of cancer. The findings of this recent discovery were published in a journal named Nature Immunology. Though the testing for the new immune cell is at an early stage, researches claim that it has "enormous potential" to treat cancer patients. So far, the testing has only been conducted on mice and in human cells, in the lab.

What is This Universal Cancer Treatment?

The team of scientists at Cardiff University was examining blood in a bank at Wales. They were precisely looking for immune cells that can fight bacteria. In their analysis, they made a breakthrough by finding a new type of T-cell. It was found during that testing in the lab that this new immune cell can kill the cells of lung, skin, blood, colon, breast, bone, prostate, ovarian, kidney and cervical cancer. Prof Andrew Sewell from the research team told BBC: "previously nobody believed this could be possible"

How Does Universal Cancer Treatment Work?

The T-cells have receptors on the surface that can see at a chemical level. These cells can scan the body and look for threats. T-cells target only cancer cells while completely ignoring healthy cells. Researchers are still looking into this discovery for effective use. Experts in the field say that this finding has great potential, however, it is at a very initial stage and more exploration should be done. The fact that this new type of immune cell could treat a wide range of cancers is very exciting. Thus, the researchers are claiming it to be a universal cancer treatment.

Conclusion

The 'possible' universal cancer treatment has given remarkable hope to doctors and patients all across the globe. More efforts are being put into further investigation.
