Dr.(Prof.) A. K. Banerji has 60 years of experience including 30 years at AIIMS. Dr. Banerji established Neurosurgery Department in AIIMS. Dr. A.K. Banerji was the Chief of the Neurosciences Centre (1988-95) and also established mental health and neurosciences centre in private sector called Vidyasagar Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (VIMHANS). Dr. Banerji is an emeritus professor at AIIMS, and an emeritus consultant at Apollo Hospital, New Delhi. He holds an MBBS(1957) degree from K. G. Medical College, Lucknow, an MS (Surgery) (1961) from the same college and also an MS (Neurosurgery) (1964), from Christian Medical College, Vellore.
Dr. A. K. Banerji was the organizing secretary of the IX World Congress of Neurosurgery held in New Delhi in 1989. He has been the President of the Neurological Society of India, Indian Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery, Neurotrauma Society of India, Skull Base Surgery Society of India and Indian Society of Cerebrovascular Surgery and has made contributions to almost all neurosurgical societies in India. He has not only given several Orations but two Orations are named after him. He standardised the neurosurgical training and evaluation in India.
He had a major role in the development of all the neurosurgical sub-specialties that are currently in use. Dr. A. K. Banerji also played a major role in continuing medical education of neurosurgeons of India through World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (India) Trust of which he is a life Trustee and Secretary. His special interests in neurosurgery are brain tumors, cerebrovascular surgery, pediatric neurosurgery and spinal surgery.
