Dr. Suresh Advani

The Director of the Department of Medical Oncology at Jaslok Hospital and Nanavati Hospital, Dr. Suresh Advani has over 47 years of rich experience in his field. Dr. Suresh Advani is a renowned Mumbai-based Oncologist who pioneered Cell transplantation in the city of Mumbai along with the rest of India. Dr. Advani is the first Oncologist in the country who successfully transplanted bone marrow into a nine-year-old girl with myeloid leukemia from her brother.

He has always been a man of willpower, diagnosed with poliomyelitis at an early age, Dr. Suresh Advani had never let this come in the way of his medical journey.  He obtained the MBBS and MD Medicine degrees from Grant Medical College, Mumbai, and then served as a Medical Oncologist at Tata Memorial Hospital for many years. To further gain experience in the field of bone marrow transplantation, Dr. Suresh went to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, in Seattle, Washington. There he got a chance to work with 1990’s Nobel Prize winner Dr. E Donnall Thomas, who is a famous Oncologist and known as the father of bone marrow transplantation.

Besides working at Jaslok Hospital, SL Raheja, and Nanavati Hospital, Dr. Suresh Advani is also heading an NGO Helping Hands which provides Holistic Cancer Care. During his tenure at Tata Memorial Hospital, he has also worked as the chief investigator for the acute Lymphoblastic leukemia project supported by the National Cancer Institute Washington and the chronic Lymphatic project supported by the Department of Science and Technology.

Dr. Suresh Advani Oncologist is the recipient of many international and national awards including the Padma Shri Award, the highest civilian honor granted by the President of India. He has received many awards for his work in the field of Oncology out of them few are ‘’Dhanvantari Award (2002)”, “PADMA SHRI” by the Government of India (2002), and “PADMABHUSHAN” by the Government of India (2012). His special interests lie in Bone marrow and Cell transplant, Lymphomas, Acute leukemias, Multiple myelomas, Breast Cancer, Spreading Cancer awareness and Cancer education and Clinical Trials
