Fasting for a particular amount of time seems to be an easy enough task. The interior mechanism and metabolic activity of the body are affected as a result of fasting. Abstaining from food for a prolonged period may also have negative repercussions on the body. Here are a few effects of fasting on the body.
1. Reduced metabolism
During fasting, the body goes into conservation mode which results into a slow metabolism rate. This decreases the rate at which the body burns fat.
2. Muscle loss
When the body is deprived of food, it begins to break down muscle tissue to extract protein. For as long as 21 days after fasting, the body starts burning fat again but also continues to burn the lean muscle tissues. Once lost, muscle cells are extremely difficult to replace.
3. High autolysis rate
Every cell present in the body is equipped with self-destructing enzymes. When the need arises, cells release these toxins and self-destruct. This process is known as autolysis. When one is fasting, the body breaks down non-essential material, thus causing autolysis. Rapid breakdown of cells and tissues may hamper the normal functioning of the body.
4. Diuresis
Diuresis is a process within which the kidneys excrete salt and water. Diuresis helps in lowering the blood pressure and is beneficial for the body. During a fast, this process is further enhanced as it causes no damage to the body tissues.
5. Stronger immune system
During a fast, the strength of the body's white blood cells is further enhanced and they are equipped to tackle virus and bacteria more effectively. Research has proved that the white blood cells of a person while fasting are stronger than of those on a normal diet plan.
6. Breakdown of cholesterol
When fasting, the body breaks down the fat cells stored in the blood vessels. This broken down fat is then made up into new cell membranes or excreted from the body. This reduces the risk of heart problems.
7. Rest to the organs
Fasting gives the body a break from the regular routine and gives it a chance to rested, rebuilding strength.
8. Negative health effects
Fasting results in low blood pressure and an increased level of urea and ammonia in the body.
9. Breaks addiction
Fasting during the holy time of Navratri, also means abstaining from Alcohol and smoking for some people. This break can help people break addiction patterns.
